Braemar Mountain Rescue Association
Braemar Mountain Rescue is our nominated charity partner. The rescue team will also be at the event to provide additional safety support to all participants in partnership with our professional staff and first aid teams.
Please help us support this fantastic voluntary emergency service!
Who are they?
Braemar Mountain Rescue Association was formed in 1965 by local residents of Deeside, Scotland. They often had little or no mountaineering experience or adequate equipment, yet found themselves called upon to rescue others from dire and often hopeless situations.
In 2015 Braemar Mountain Rescue Association (Scottish Charity SC008652) celebrated 50 years of service, and the team presently comprises a total of 40 men and women from all walks of life who live and work locally. Unlike their predecessors they are highly trained and have professional kit at their disposal.
Yet the essence remains unchanged: these volunteers still put their lives on the line during rescue missions in the most inaccessible places of the Scottish wilderness, often at night and in atrocious weather conditions.
It costs £70,000 to run this service each year as the purchase, usage and upkeep of the team’s specialist vehicles and equipment is hugely expensive. However, this equipment frequently makes the difference between life and death on the mountains.
Please support this essential voluntary service – if you love spending time in the outdoors you might need their help one day!

The rescue team (past and present) have collected together some of the stories and photographs that celebrate its 50 years of service and many of its characters; with assorted misremembered tales of derring-do, wild haverings, and the dottled recollections of by-gone days when storms were stormier, snow was snowier, and tweed, tackity-beets and a muckle Thermos kept the elements at bay ...
